The benefits of Automated Library Systems are many, but as with any technology, the owners have a responsibility to maintain and keep current their investment. This tutorial addresses the changes in control technology and will help owners develop an appropriate upgrade path for their systems. Owners of newly installed libraries will be interested to understand the directions that technology is moving in order to create 10 and 20 year strategic ownership plans. In this session, a history of Storage and Retrieval Machines will be provided with a focus on the benefits of next-generation processors, positioning systems, communication technologies and more.
